Umed Paliwal
Umed Paliwal is a Principal Scientific Engineering Associate in the Electricity Markets and Policy Department at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His research focuses on renewable energy integration, electricity markets and policies, and electric vehicles. Umed has played a key role in several high-impact energy modeling studies that have demonstrated pathways to rapidly decarbonize the U.S. electricity sector and transportation system.
Umed's expertise spans techno-economic analysis, power system modeling, and advanced computational techniques. He has leveraged cloud computing and big data analytics to process and analyze massive datasets, including terabytes of meteorological data and high-resolution satellite imagery. His work includes developing AI-based models for renewable energy forecasting and resource assessment. Umed has implemented efficient data processing pipelines using cloud services, enabling the simulation of renewable energy generation across numerous locations globally. These innovative approaches have enhanced the accuracy and scope of renewable energy potential assessments, informing policy and investment decisions in the energy sector.
Umed holds a Master of Public Policy from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.Tech.- M.Tech. Dual Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He is a recipient of the Berkeley Lab Director's Award for Exceptional Scientific Achievement in Societal Impact. Umed's research has been widely cited in major media outlets and has informed policy discussions at the state and federal levels.
