Energy Technologies Area (ETA) researchers are continually building on the strong scientific foundation we have developed over the past 50 years. We address the world’s most pressing climate challenges by bringing to market energy-efficient innovations across the buildings, transportation, and industrial sectors. ETA is at the forefront of developing better batteries for electric vehicles; improving the country's aging electrical grid and innovating distributed energy and storage solutions; developing grid-interactive, efficient buildings; and providing the most comprehensive market and data analysis worldwide for renewable technologies like wind and solar.

The Energy Technologies Area (ETA) Strategic Plan is the guiding force for our research and development for the next ten years. It clearly charts a path toward clean-energy solutions and focuses on five detailed Strategic Initiatives. The Plan provides an in-depth look at how ETA is accelerating research to provide affordable, clean energy to all while accomplishing deep, economy-wide decarbonization, looking to avoid a rise in global average temperature while simultaneously developing solutions to increase humanity's resilience to extreme weather volatility.

McCloskey Honored with Tajima Prize

Bryan McCloskey, professor in UC Berkeley College of Chemistry and a chemical faculty engineer affiliated with the Energy Storage and Distributed Resources Division at Berkeley Lab, has been awarded the 2021 Tajima Prize. The honor from the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) recognizes McCloskey’s outstanding contributions to electrochemistry on the basis of his published work.

McCloskey’s research broadly focuses on fundamental processes occurring in electrochemical systems, with a particular emphasis on batteries and electrocatalysis. He employs various advanced characterization techniques to gain insight into the mechanism of electrode materials’ function and operation, which can lead to improvements in electrochemical systems performance. McCloskey was recognized for his foundational work to understand interfacial phenomena in lithium-air and lithium-ion batteries.

The annual prize, which was established in the mid-1980s with a donation from Japanese professor and scientist Sakae Tajima, is awarded annually to an outstanding electrochemist under the age of 40. As part of the award, McCloskey will receive 1,000 Swiss Francs and an invited lecture at the 2022 ISE Annual Meeting in Xiamen, China.

“I am beyond honored to receive the Tajima Prize,” McCloskey said. “It is a testament to all McCloskey Lab members, past and present, whose outstanding work made this award possible.”
