Energy Technologies Area (ETA) researchers are continually building on the strong scientific foundation we have developed over the past 50 years. We address the world’s most pressing climate challenges by bringing to market energy-efficient innovations across the buildings, transportation, and industrial sectors. ETA is at the forefront of developing better batteries for electric vehicles; improving the country's aging electrical grid and innovating distributed energy and storage solutions; developing grid-interactive, efficient buildings; and providing the most comprehensive market and data analysis worldwide for renewable technologies like wind and solar.

The Energy Technologies Area (ETA) Strategic Plan is the guiding force for our research and development for the next ten years. It clearly charts a path toward clean-energy solutions and focuses on five detailed Strategic Initiatives. The Plan provides an in-depth look at how ETA is accelerating research to provide affordable, clean energy to all while accomplishing deep, economy-wide decarbonization, looking to avoid a rise in global average temperature while simultaneously developing solutions to increase humanity's resilience to extreme weather volatility.

DOE Program Brings Together National Labs to Boost Clean Energy in Communities

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced an initiative designed to support communities in implementing clean energy projects. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is among five DOE national research labs participating in the Clean Energy to Communities (C2C) program, which is led by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

C2C will provide utilities, local governments, and community-based organizations with the modeling, analysis, and validation of plans that cities are developing to operate clean energy systems. These systems could include energy sources that enhance reliability and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, such as wind turbines, solar panels, and battery banks.

“Cities and towns throughout the U.S. are eager to join the clean energy transition, but they need technical assistance to plan and deploy projects that will meet their goals,” said Christopher Payne, a research scientist at Berkeley Lab’s Building Technology and Urban Systems Division. “C2C will provide the modeling, analysis, and validation needed to ensure these projects are successful. In particular, C2C’s ‘Peer Learning Cohorts’ will prioritize developing workforce capacity in these areas.”

Based on feedback from more than 160 community stakeholders around the country, the C2C program will offer three levels of engagement, ranging from about two months to up to three years, depending on a project’s scope and level of need.
