Biography
Dr. Xu has more than 20 years of experience in extensive energy
RD&D and energy management as a scientist, program manager, energy analyst,
and educator. His contributions have
been in improving scientific understanding of comfort under elevated air speed,
temperature, and humidity; characterizing, modeling, and improving residential,
commercial and industrial building systems (envelop, thermal, lighting, and
acoustics) and industrial processes; developing field methods and techniques to
quantify environmental quality and energy efficiency in buildings and
mission-critical facilities; assessing energy use, savings opportunities, and
associated economics in building and industrial sectors ranging from heavy- to
light-industries (e.g., cement, steel, waste water, dairies, and others); developing
tools and strategies of reducing water/energy wastes and energy demand; and developing
energy guides and standards for buildings and urban systems. At Berkeley Lab,
his work includes in-depth scientific research (micro-level on specific energy
and environmental technologies), as well as large-scale deployment and
evaluation (macro-level activities that induce societal/economic impacts
through promoting innovative standards, policies, and technical assistance in
energy policy-making) in developed and developing worlds.
His recent projects assist the industries, state and federal
agencies such as California Energy Commission and EPA to address challenges and
opportunities to promote efficiency and emerging technologies locally and
internationally, and to develop information, tools and strategies for improving
energy efficiency in building and industrial sectors on the state, country, and
international levels (e.g., USA, China, India, Chile, etc.), all benefiting our
understanding the effects of mitigation measures on global energy-climate modeling.
In addition to research, he also provides
expert or consulting services to various governments, NGOs, and industries in
Asia, North and South America on energy and low-carbon development.
To date, Xu has authored and coauthored more than 100 papers
and formal reports, including those appeared in peer-reviewed journals and
conferences. A contributor to various industrial handbooks, best practice
guides, and to improvement of building standards in California, Dr. Xu is a
recipient of prestigious awards for publications and professional contributions,
including two best paper awards and numerous awards for outstanding
contributions in publications and professional services. Xu serves various
scientific, professional, and academic committees in Canada, China, Hong Kong,
Singapore, and USA, and has been invited to lecture nationally and
internationally in leading academia as well as professional organizations. He
is a Visiting Professor in Tsinghua University.
As the Contamination Control Technical Vice President of IEST (2005-2007), he was the US delegate to ISO
TC209 Cleanrooms and associated
controlled environments that formulates ISO Standards, and directed the development
and publications of various industrial standards. An internationally recognized
expert, Dr. Xu holds editorship as an Editorial Advisory Board member or Editor
for the following archival journals:
· Building and Environment - The International Journal in Building
Science and Its Applications (Elsevier)
· Sustainable Cities and Society (Elsevier)
· Building Simulation – an International Journal (Springer+Tsinghua)
· Journal of the IEST (IEST).
